DIY: Mason Jars

Frugality is a trait I am proud of.  And perhaps it is from the Ilokano in me.

About 8 weeks ago, my friend M and I had decided that using mason jars to serve as vases for flowers will look classy and elegant, and instead of just having it plain, we agreed that the stained vintage look will even be better.  But I cringed when I learned that one jar can cost between $8 to $14, un-shipped -- particularly because I already know that each plain jar is less than a dollar each (I had intended to stock this in my pantry, as I think it's a cool beverage container when having folks around... I know, not original, but hey, it is a great drink jar!).  And thanks to google, I was able to find the material I need to get going.  I got a dozen jars for about $10.00 (I got lucky, the jars were on sale), ordered the glass paint needed through amazon (and yes, the shipping was free) and got ready when I had everything in place.  Using an old pastry brush and some unused makeup sponge, paper plates (for mixing the paint), wax paper and old newspaper, I get going.

This isn't the finish product yet, but the color took the way I was hoping it would.  After 24 hours, I have to let it set in the oven so the paint can be permanent.  I was hoping the weather would be a little nicer when I do this - only because I want my porch doors and windows open when I get this in the oven (although, the forecast isn't encouraging).

Of course when I factor in the time I had put in this, and how much it cost if I had been paid, this could very well be the most expensive stained mason jar.

Or I just want to look at it that way.
